Home Sweet Home: A Unique Residential Apartment Design

Creating an Illusion of Height and Functionality

Because of the very low ceiling near the entrance, designer Wing Nga Ng used a number of design features to create an illusion of height in the Home Sweet Home residential apartment. Dark wooden stripes in plastic laminate finishes were strategically placed to lengthen the look of the walls, while white-colored plastic laminate was used to hide the master bedroom door located in the middle of the living and dining area. This design not only enhances the visual appeal but also maximizes functionality.

A residential building over 50 years old, Home Sweet Home boasts an unconventionally linear layout where two bedrooms are accessible directly from the main living area. One of the design's unique properties lies in the deliberately concealed doors that seamlessly blend with the rest of the walls and decor. At one end of the apartment, balcony doors open up to breathtaking views of Victoria Harbour, allowing natural light to diffuse throughout the space. To further enhance the sense of openness, a glass sliding door study room has been positioned at the opposite end, ensuring maximum visual transparency. The pale-colored walls and ceiling disperse light, creating a sense of spaciousness.

The realization of this design involved the use of plastic laminate and laminated floorboards to prevent scratches, making it suitable for families with small children. The meticulous attention to detail and thoughtful selection of materials contribute to the practicality and modernity of the design.

Chapman So, a member of the design team, collaborated with Wing Nga Ng to bring this project to life. The design process began in July 2018 in Hong Kong and was completed in December 2018. Overcoming the challenge of an apartment with an unconventional layout, the team re-arranged the bathrooms and kitchen, adding an additional study room to optimize the space.

Home Sweet Home has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2019. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life. Home Sweet Home exemplifies the fusion of art, science, design, and technology, making it a truly remarkable addition to the world of residential architecture and interior design.
